ORLANDO, FL - Was it fate or divine intervention that I met Pastor Eric Kirkland? Either way, I'm glad I found him and his restaurant, Pastor Kirk's Chicken & Waffles.
While shooting video at BJ's T-Shirt Shop at Magic Mall (see here), a smiling man walked into the tiny shop and delivered a container of food. That man was Pastor Kirkland, owner and founder of Pastor Kirk's Chicken & Waffles.
"Take a menu," he said to me.
When I learned he is a man of God AND runs a Chicken & Waffles restaurant at his church, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Orlando, I had to do an Orlando 60 feature on him.
And then I saw the Chicken & Waffle Club Sandwich on the menu. Now, I've eaten a lot of interesting things in my life, but never had I seen a Chicken & Waffle Club Sandwich. I had to try it.
Kirkland operates his restaurant out of a portable trailer on the church grounds. He started it four years ago with his wife, who has since passed away. The restaurant is a bare-bones operation with a pair of waffles irons, a few fryers and a microwave. But don't let the limited kitchen scare you, because Pastor Kirk is passionate about two things: feeding souls and feeding people.
The Chicken & Waffle Club Sandwich is made with a fried chicken breast, ham, bacon, lettuce and tomato. The "sandwich" part is a homemade waffle that's soaked with syrup to give it a sweet taste.
It's a heavenly treat.
Pastor Kirk's Chicken & Waffles is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
