MOUNT DORA, FL - Mandy Cushman never thought she'd be known for her burgers.
In fact, the owner of the Grub Hub Cafe inside Renninger's Antique Center in Mount Dora doesn't really have any burger-making secrets.
No special seasonings. It's 80/20 ground beef. The bun is toasted and served with or without all the fixings.
But perhaps in a world where chefs are ever determined to add strange ingredients to burgers, it is Cushaman's simplicity that makes her burgers stand out. Her only "secret" is that she cooks her burgers on a grill that's also used to fry bacon, onions and home fries, so that flavor seeps into the meat.
For nearly a decade, Cushman, who has been dubbed "The Burger Queen" by her loyal customers, has been cooking up burgers on her flat grill at the antique center location. The Lake County native grew up working in restaurants and eventually ventured out on her own.
Besides her burgers, Cushman makes a variety of what I would call "American Lunch Food," such as chicken salad sandwiches, turkey club sandwiches and hot dogs. Cushman also makes home-made desserts.
